Character Name: Manji
Age: 28
Canon: Blade of the Immortal
Canon point: Volume 25; Chapter: Snow, Like Blossoms
History: Wiki Link CONTENT WARNING: These topics will be mentioned in the wiki link: bodies infected with magical worms, body parts being chopped off, corpse disrespect, past rape, prostitution, and medical experimentation/torture.

Personality:
Outside Grumpy Old Man, hidden softy: Manji may only be 28, but he can often act like he is 80. Gruff and often scowling, he is a bit of a hermit. Wishing to be left alone with his immortality in his simple shack. At the start of the manga Manji attempts to push Rin away when she comes to him, begging for his help as she has nothing left but her drive for revenge against her parent's killers. He tries to tell her to leave and brush her away. Putting up a front that he doesn't care about her or anyone in the world, but he still walks her back to town to make sure she gets there safely. Showing right at the start how his rough exterior is hiding someone who cares deep down.

Manji often talks about how cruel the world is. Acting tough and trying to give off the air of not caring about what happens to the people around him. Yet his actions often speak louder than his words. He often lets his enemies live, so long as they are no longer a threat to Rin, He'll give away his weapons to make a fight fair. He agrees to see the Mugai-ryu leader even though he has no intention of joining the group to make sure that someone isn't killed for failing to bring him in. Even before he was infected with worms his actions speak of someone who cares about other people. Turning on his Daimyo when he found out they were enforcing unfair rule on the people they were suppose to govern and protect. It's this action that earned Manji the nickname of: The Hundred Man Killer as he killed the officers who tried to arrest him for his actions.

Stubborn As often as Manji grumbles and says how much he hates his immortality, he has a few chances to escape it. Refusing other suggestions about how to free himself and stubbornly declaring that he will be free of his curse by killing a thousand bad men for the hundred good ones he killed. Instead of taking an easier route to the death he claims to want, he continues to try to kill a thousand truly bad men. Even after he points out just how impossible a task it is to call someone truly evil or bad. There is usually a deeper meaning to someone's actions that even if they look evil on the surface it can be hard to say for sure.

Self Sufficient Steaming from both his own personality and the time that he grew up in, Manji would much rather rely on his own skills and abilities then ask for help. Preferring to power through his problems and challenges. He knows how to cook, fish, hunt, patch up his dwelling, and take care of his blades. When he comes across something that his own skills and knowledge can't solve then he struggles to ask for help. In canon he wasted a lot of time trying to get past a check point with brute force and stealing, when if he had simply asked a friend for help he would have been given a simple solution.

Reckless When he puts his mind to a task Manji can be very brilliant and perspective. The problem is that knowing he is immortal has made him reckless and bored. Before he met Rin he thought he wanted an end to his curse and his immortal life. This changes over the course of the story as he learns to live to protect Rin again, but that doesn't stop his reckless side. The thrill of a really good battle and the chance of dying in one still calls to Manji. Often doing senseless things in order to make a fight more “fair” or acting first and thinking later.

Lazy: Manji should be much stronger, faster, and deadlier than he is, but since being cursed with the immortal worms he's gotten lazy. Relaying more on his immortality he is no longer the best swordsman around. Attacks that in his prime he could have easily dodged usually hit because he knows he can heal from the damage. It still hurts, but that fear of death has left him, dulling his sense of urgency. Even outside of combat Manji will do some training, but more often than not can be found lounging around his shack.

Suitability: The canon point I am taking Manji from he was travelling with a girl, Rin, who he cares deeply for. She is a bit reckless and he will be worried about her going off to an unwinnable fight without him. ADI is clearly his best chance of getting back to protect her. That and he's also lazy with no real idea how the modern world works. So while initially he's sceptical of ADI he will risk it in order to get home to Rin.

Powers/Abilities: Magical: Manji is infected with Kessen-Chu which are sacred blood worms. They have the ability to heal nearly any damage Manji takes almost instantly. He can even reattach limbs after they've been separated and those limbs don't even need to be his own. The worms can't save him from being decapitated, drowned, frozen, or being set on fire. They can heal the damage done by these things if Manji survives the experience. The most extreme example from canon being when he was cut in half and managed to reattach his upper and lower half within a couple minutes.

Non Magical: Physical Skill:: Besides being immortal, Manji is your standard (anime) human set in a mostly realistic world. He is very skilled swordsman so he is a bit faster and stronger than most people due to being athletic. So, for example, he could easily outrun/jump an average person, but would fail against a trained sprinter.

Weapon Skill: In canon Manji is seen picking up the weapons of his enemies. He has a collection and trains with each one he picks up. He's a master of the katana, but he is proficient in most bladed, thrown, and spear weapons.

Entity Affinity: The Corruption because... well, worms. (CW: Clip is of Manji's worms reattaching his arm in the live action movie and then after him killing a man.)

Inventory: His pipe and two swords. They have names and history that isn't overly important, but I thought I'd add the detail to the app for fun. Part of his collection can be pictured here.

One of his Imo-no-Kami Tatsumasa – The katana that use to belong to his sister's husband. Normally it is a paired set, but he will only be taking one into game with him.

One of his Shidō – He actually has a pair of these as well, but he'll only be bringing in one of them. They were stolen and named after the man who killed his sister. They're a little shorter than a katana with two circular holes at each end of the hilt. A second, shorter blade protrudes slightly out from the hilt. It's the first set of blades in the reference picture.

Samples: Test Drive Meme - If this sample is too short let me know and I'll write up a fresh sample instead.
